Spirit Wear Tomorrow!
Tomorrow, please remember to wear any Kemp shirts OR blue and gray for our spirit wear competition. We have won most of the time this year and we want to keep going and get our prizes - maybe win the grand prize! Today, we had some fun with trash can basketball. Ask your student what we did! Field day is NEXT Friday. Have a great evening!

Happy Wednesday
We are taking a little break from homework this week. We know you and the students are sad. Ha ha! We will probably resume next week. We are, however, continuing to work hard in the classroom. We are doing some math projects within our math time, and delving deep into social studies. We will have a spelling test this Friday, and students should continue to read their book club books if they have one. Please remember that our Field Day is next Friday. You received information about Field Day in an email. Have a great week!

Tonight's Homework:
Fractions worksheet
We will have a text structures assessment on Friday. Last week, students turned in their text structures study guide, we graded them and then handed them back. We asked students to fix their mistakes on a separate sheet of paper. Any student that turns in the corrected study guide (with the correct answers!) will receive extra credit on the assessment!
Book Club Reading (Book Club reading assignments and the Text Structures test on Friday do not apply to Read 180 students.)
Students will bring home their Colonization lap books on Friday. A study guide was sent home last week, as well as emailed. We will have a test over all of the information in the study guide on March 3rd.

Dear Parents,
Thank you, thank you!! We loved our sweet cards and flowers, our students are the best! Thank you also for sending in money to feed us. You know how we love to eat! We feel loved. 💜💜💜💜
Homework tonight is a very easy addition of fractions sheet. If your student did not finish their morning work, then that is homework as well (not so easy). We worked on this sheet on and off during the day, and the students should know that they have to determine what to do with the denominator according to each problem. We will continue working on simplifying, comparing, and ordering fractions. Later this week, we will move into subtracting fractions with like denominators, then using different denominators. Keep working on those math facts!

They should be able to recognize each colony by shape and spell it correctly. Here is the acronym we came up with for remembering the order of the colonies:
My (Massachusetts)
New (New Hampshire)
Race (Rhode Island)
Car (Connecticut)
Never (New York)
Parks (Pennsylvania)
Near (New Jersey)
Dumpsters (Delaware)
My (Maryland)
Vehicle (Virginia)
Now (North Carolina)
Smells (South Carolina)
Good (Georgia)

Looking ahead...
1/16- MLK Holiday- No school!
1/20- Spelling test and science quiz over all sound vocabulary and concepts (see study guide!)
1/20- Multicultural Night
1/23- Kemp Night at Mellow Mushroom in Hiram
1/27- Spirit Wear Day
Math: We are beginning our study of fractions with Equivalent Fractions! After a brief review of fraction vocabulary, we will begin identifying equivalent fractions and making equivalent fractions using, models, multiplication, and division. We will learn how to find equivalent factors and how to write fractions in "simplest form" (also known as reducing fractions) using Greatest Common Factor (GCF). We will be gluing strategies and writing examples in our math journals! It would benefit each student to take home their math journals when doing homework. That way they can refer back to examples we did in class as a reference; therefore, parents can also see the strategies we are using in class. Please make sure journals return to school each day! Below are some helpful videos for this standard.

Khan Academy: Intro. to Equivalent Fractions
Reading: We are still reading our extended text, Wonder by R.J Palacio. This text is rather long, and we will be well into the 3rd nine weeks before we finish the book. We will be doing a variety of reading strategies and projects daily with the text. We have been working with context clues strategies. We focused on different strategies to use when reading to figure out unknown word meanings. Next week we will begin our study on poetry, drama and prose. Students will get a homework packet to go along with this.
Writing: We are moving into the Opinion Writing genre. Students will be using a variety of topics to express their opinions and formulating strong arguments to write an opinion piece.
Grammar: Next week we will focus on figurative language. We will specifically be determining the difference and meanings of similes and metaphors. We will have SMART Board lessons each day, and well as plenty of practice activities. Students will receive a study guide on Tuesday with all of the figurative language in our unit. We will eventually take a test over figurative language, so studying will be important!
Science: Our next unit is the study of Sound and Light. We will really delve into this next week, beginning with sound. We sent home a study guide this week and we would like for students to go ahead and start studying the vocabulary for light and sound. Take a look at the videos below so that you will be familiar with the standards and vocabulary your child will be learning!
A few reminders:
*Please review your child's homework with them each night. PLEASE feel free to email us with any questions about how to help your child with his/her homework. It can be very confusing for students to learn how to solve a problem one way at school, and then a totally different way at home. If you need clarification or examples of how to use one of our strategies please let us know!
*Make sure to check Synergy often for updated weekly grades.
*Please remember that Moby Max and First in Math are valuable tools your child can use for extra practice in all subject areas. Students have login information in the front of their agendas.

For those of you who check the blog daily, thank you for being patient while Mrs. DuShane was out sick!
This week we are focusing on context clues in reading, opinion writing, patterns in math and we are beginning our light and sound unit. Students are getting a study guide for light and sound today. The vocab is heavy for this science unit, so please make sure your child is studying a little bit each day. We will also have a spelling test next Wednesday.
Tonight's Homework:
