Math:
This past week, we practiced finding the area and perimeter of rectangles and rectilinear figures.
Rectilinear figures
Above is a rectilinear figure! The students have been taught to divide the figure into smaller rectangles, find the area of the smaller rectangles, then add the areas together to find the area of the entire shape.

Social Studies
We will wrap up our unit on Native Americans next week with the unit test next Friday. Then we are moving straight from the First Americans into European Exploration. Although we will be learning about lots of Explorers, including World Explorers, our main focus will be Christopher Columbus, Jacques Cartier, Henry Hudson, John Cabot, Juan Ponce de Leon and Vasco Nunez de Balboa. The students should be able to explain how each of these explorers adapted, or failed to adapt, to the various physical environments to which they traveled. We will also describe examples of cooperation & conflict between the Europeans and Native Americans. We will fill out a graphic organizer in class together as we focus on each of the explorers. The students will glue additional information into their journals about each explorer, as well as completing their historical figure project to present at the Explorer's Feast. (More info to come!)
Hope you have a great weekend!
