Congratulations to Alex Chidiac and Emmie Barber, our new Student Council Representatives!

We had a really good week!

We wrapped up our Map Skills unit, and we will begin our first science unit on Monday: Water and Weather. We will do a lot of fun experiments with this unit!

In math, we continued learning how to round numbers. We introduced a vertical number line, and students learned how to use benchmark numbers when rounding.

We are learning how to close read non-fiction texts. We will learn several BIG QUESTIONS to ask ourselves while reading over the next few weeks. The first BIG question is, "What surprised me?". Students used sticky notes while we read articles and watched a few news clips to write down surprising facts that they learned as they were reading. Asking questions while reading helps us to engage ourselves in the text and think deeper about what we are reading about.

This week in writing we started learning about the 5 steps in the writing process. We modeled prewriting and drafting, and the kids began writing an informational piece about a family member. We will focus on revising, editing and publishing next week.

Friday, August 12, 2016

Happy Friday! It's been a long week, and these kids are ready for a restful weekend!

What did we do this week???

We continued to learn about place value in math. We learned how to write numbers in standard, word and expanded form. We also started to talk about the powers of ten when multiplying and dividing.

In reading this week, we continued to read aloud our extended text, A Long Walk to Water. The kids are enjoying learning about Salva, a lost boy of Sudan, and his journey through Africa during the war. (Students who go to Read 180 are not reading this book.)

We worked on our Superhero writing pieces this week. They are hanging in the hallway, stop by and take a look! Next week we will begin learning about the writing process, and we will begin working on informational writing.

We spent a lot of time identifying nouns, pronouns, verbs and adjectives this week. Next week we will continue to practice all of these and we will learn about adverbs.
We continued working on understanding the parts of a map. We learned the acronym HOMES to help us remember the Great Lakes (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior). Spelling will count on our test next Friday! We will spend time next week going on a virtual road trip of all the landforms on our study guide!

It's time to elect two students from our class to serve on the Student Council. We have asked the students who are interested to take the initiative, and locate the information below to share with their parents. There are certain requirements to meet if a student would like to be on Student Council, so it is very important for parents/students to read all of the information. Interested students must write a paragraph telling us why they would make a great Student Council representative and turn it in by Monday, August 15th. The class will then vote on two students to represent our class.

We have had a great first week of school! We have gotten to know each other and enjoyed playing games & learning names! We have spent a great deal of time getting organized with all of our school supplies and now its time to get to work!!
Thank you to all the parents who have sent in items from the "Wish List!"
Thank you to Carson's family for sending us delicious treats from McEntyre's Bakery!!

Reading

If your child is attending the Read 180 program, it will begin on Monday. For those that do not do Read 180, we will begin our extended text, A Long Walk to Water. We hope that your child will share with you the perils that Salva and Nya are facing in the story. We will be reading this text aloud to the students in class and they will be recording their thoughts and questions in their reading journals. We will be referring back to this text all year long as we practice our reading strategies.
Next week we will also begin to work on our reading stamina. Each student will be expected to have an independent novel at all times. This novel should coincide with your child's appropriate Lexile level/score which we will be providing for them. Our expectation is that they will read books within their range, so that they will get the practice they need to become stronger readers! We will attach a website that you can access to check the Lexile level of your child's independent books :)
Writing
We spent time this week building our "Writer's Notebook." This notebook will be your child's toolbox for writing workshop time. The students are working on a narrative story starring themselves as the hero for you to read at Open House!

Social Studies
ThVTFR6VWW
We have begun our content studies with Mapping Skills. We will review parts of a map from 3rd grade (Title, compass rose, legend or key, latitude and longitude) and begin to take a look at map scale and types of maps and their uses. Our map standards for fourth grade require the students to be able to locate several natural and man-made features on a US Map. We sent home a study guide this week as well.
Math
We will begin our math instruction with place value. The students will be using numbers that go all the way to the millions place this year! We will be writing number forms (standard, word, expanded), adding & subtracting, and comparing and rounding numbers up to the millions place during these first few weeks of school! There will be examples and strategies in your child's math journal! We are also attaching some videos to help you get started! :)

SHHHH... SUPER SECRET MESSAGE FOR BLOG CHECKERS: Any student who tells us the secret words, "CAPTAIN AMERICA," tomorrow will receive a treat!

Monday, August 1, 2016

We had a fantastic first day of 4th grade! We spent our day learning the procedures and expectations of our classroom. We already love our new group of kiddos, and we are excited to get to know them this year!

A few important things...
  • We update the blog daily with homework assignments and news.
  • Students need a parent/guardian to sign the agenda EACH night. A parent signature indicates that you have checked to make sure your child's homework is complete.
  • Students should have a 2 inch binder, instead of a 3 inch binder.
  • We use Class DOJO to track behavior. Your child is bringing home an access code and directions for you to connect with us to keep track of his/her behavior.
Tonight's Homework: Get forms signed and return them to school.
